The 5 Golden Rules for Choosing the Perfect Glasses
Much more than a simple optical prosthesis, glasses are the ultimate accessory to assert your personality.
Depending on your desires, they can completely change your style, making you look younger, older, stricter, cooler and above all, more comfortable in your own skin.
Choosing a pair of glasses is not something to be taken lightly. Beyond aesthetic pleasure, technical parameters must also be respected.
Here I reveal 5 golden rules for choosing the perfect glasses.
1. Face shape
I don't need to tell you anything, some frames suit you better than others.
The reason? Proportions, of course! We're all unique, but there are similarities when it comes to face shapes.
To find out your face shape, look in the mirror with your hair pulled back (you can also take a front-facing selfie). Is your face round, oval, square, triangular, or heart-shaped?
Studying your face shape will help you find the perfect pair of glasses, as well as the hairstyle and makeup that will suit you best. Here are some tips to help your glasses complement your features:
- Round faces will be enhanced by the “butterfly” shape for a guaranteed “wow” effect, or angular frames to break up the roundness of the face.
- For oval faces, You can wear more or less anything as long as the frame width does not exceed the width of your face. However, avoid frames that are too narrow and will lengthen your face.
- Your face is square ? Choose a frame with rounded corners, preferably thin and light.
- If you have a triangle face with a forehead narrower than your jaw, choose a “cat-eye” frame which highlights the eyebrow and harmonizes the face.
- If you have a Heart-shaped face , your forehead is wider than your jaw. Go for round or oval frames to highlight it.
2. Visual correction
The main role of the glasses frame is of course to fit the lenses!
Do you have a shape you like in mind? Know that a pair of glasses should also be chosen based on your prescription and your visual needs.
The more severe your vision correction, the thicker the optical lens will be (in the center or at the ends depending on your vision problem). While there are options for thinning lenses, the shape of your frame will also play a role in this thickness.
The larger the frame size, the thicker the lens will be. The lens will then be less attractive and heavier.
So, if you have a low vision correction, you have no constraints and can choose any frame. On the other hand, if your correction is high, you should choose frames with a smaller lens surface.
Don't hesitate to ask your favorite optician for advice!
→ Tip: the size written on the left arm of the frame (generally between 45 and 65) is actually the measurement of the width of the lens in mm!
3. The style
Your glasses enhance your face.
Depending on your tastes, you can opt for glasses that are more or less original, chic, classic, discreet... Explore the different options available to you and take the time to try on all the frames you like.
- Frames made from bio-acetate or classic cellulose acetate are highly durable, hypoallergenic, and come in a wide range of colors. They also offer cutting-edge effects (wood effect, tortoiseshell, brushed, shiny, matte, etc.).
- Metal frames are thinner, lighter, and offer a more discreet style. In eyewear, there are several types of metals of varying qualities that affect the durability and price of the frame.
- Injected plastic frames offer a wide range of patterns and colors but are of poor quality and above all represent an ecological disaster because they are made from petroleum.
4. The tint
Choosing the color of your frame is very personal and can be a real headache! We often fall back on black or tortoiseshell. There are so many beautiful, unusual models on the market; it would be a shame to miss out.
To create a beautiful harmony with your face, opt for a frame that will illuminate it without masking it and highlight your complexion as well as your hair.
→ Easily determine your skin tone by standing in front of a mirror with natural light. Then, among your gold or silver jewelry, look at the ones that flatter you the most.
If it's gold, you belong to warm temperatures. If, on the other hand, it's silver that best reveals your complexion and makes your eyes sparkle, then you belong to cool temperatures.
- So, for cool-toned skin, opt for glasses that add contrast, such as black, dark tortoiseshell, plum, and any dark color.
- On the contrary, if your complexion is rather warm, go for yellow, red or beige tortoiseshell colors.
- And finally, if you have dark skin, you can go all out! Go wild with bright colors that will suit you perfectly.
5. Brand quality and values
First of all, what is the frame made of?
Acetate, stainless steel, plastic, wood? Not all materials are equal in terms of durability and environmental toxicity.
Favor biodegradable, bio-sourced, recycled and recyclable materials, such as bio-acetate, wood, recycled metal, etc.
Where does the frame come from?
Depending on its origin, the frame may have traveled thousands of kilometers and was potentially manufactured in conditions very different from those experienced in France.
In any case, if the frame is made in France or in a neighboring country (Italy, Germany, Spain, etc.) it will be written inside the temple: “Made in…”. If there is nothing written, it is because the origin is perhaps not avowable!
Do the brand values match yours?
Buying a product means supporting and financing the sustainability of the brand that makes it. We can't stress this enough: choose local brands on a human scale.
→ Be careful of: “Designed in…” and “Assembled in…” France/city name. Very often, this is a way of hiding a manufacturing process that is too far away.
